Apple wants a "delete account" option in my app

By Huruy Kidanemariam, who shipped Beles and EBT Finder to the App Store. Updated .

The short answer

If people can create an account in your app, they have to be able to start deleting it from inside the app. "Email us to delete" isn't enough. A link is fine only if it opens straight to the page where they finish deleting it.

What Apple expects

Apple's message usually says the app "supports account creation but does not include an option to initiate account deletion." Apple expects a clear Delete account option, usually in Settings or Profile, that actually deletes the account and its data. A confirmation step is fine. If the law makes you keep some records, say so in the app.

How to fix it

  1. Add Delete account to Settings or Profile.
  2. Delete the account and its data on your server, not just in the app. With Supabase (which Lovable uses), that takes a small server function, because the app itself isn't allowed to remove users.
  3. If people use Sign in with Apple, also tell Apple to disconnect their account. It's one extra step on your server, and Apple expects it.
  4. Tell the reviewer where to find it in your note.

Questions

Can I just deactivate the account?
No. Apple wants the account and its data actually deleted. You can offer deactivation as well, but not instead.
Does this apply if there's no sign-up?
No. It only applies to apps where people create an account.

Apple calls this Guideline 5.1.1(v), Account Deletion in the App Review Guidelines.
